Anupama Chopra reviews Tanvi the Great, the drama starring debutant Shubhangi Dutt in the lead role. Directed by Anupam Kher after a 23-year gap and produced by Anupam Kher Studio in association with NFDC, this film follows Tanvi Raina, a 21-year-old autistic girl who dreams of joining the Indian Army to fulfill her deceased father's dream of saluting the flag at Siachen Glacier. In this detailed review for The Hollywood Reporter India, Anupama examines how the film attempts to tackle multiple themes including autism awareness and army patriotism, while critiquing how the story becomes convoluted as it tries to tick too many boxes. She discusses Shubhangi Dutt's committed portrayal of autism and how it compares to more authentic representations in films like Taare Zameen Par where neurodivergent actors played neurodivergent characters. Anupama highlights Anupam Kher's dual role as both director and actor, praising his restrained performance as grandfather Colonel Pratap Raina while noting areas where his direction could have been stronger. She reviews the supporting performances from Pallavi Joshi as Tanvi's mother Vidya, Boman Irani as music teacher Raza Saab, and other cast members including Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, and Iain Glen. The review covers M.M. Keeravani's music composition and Keiko Nakahara's cinematography, while critiquing the film's 2 hours 39 minutes runtime. Anupama concludes that while there's a good film buried in the grandfather-granddaughter relationship, it gets lost in overwrought storytelling that veers between being moving and dull.
