The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) hosted a grand three-day celebration of India’s 79th Independence Day across New York, marking one of the largest tributes outside India. The festivities began on August 15 with the Empire State Building and other state landmarks illuminated in the Indian tricolor, accompanied by inspiring addresses from FIA leaders and dignitaries. Bollywood star Vijay Deverakonda had the honor of pulling the ceremonial switch to light the Empire State Building. On August 16, the Indian national flag was unfurled at Times Square for the first time, with chants of Vande Mataram and Bharat Mata Ki Jai echoing through Manhattan. Deverakonda once again led the ceremony, joined by community leaders, Consul General of India in New York Binaya Pradhan, and thousands of Indian Americans. The celebrations culminated on August 17 with the 43rd Annual India Day Parade, themed “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah – May All Be Happy.” Featuring more than 35 floats, vibrant cultural displays, and a lively street fair, the parade highlighted the unity and diversity of the Indian diaspora. Grand Marshals Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda led the festivities alongside New York Mayor Eric Adams and dignitaries including Congressman Shri Thanedar, MP Satnam Singh Sandhu, Consul General Binaya Pradhan, Padma Shri recipient Dr. Sudhir Parikh, and many others.
