Starry Starfish Beach - Motukiekie Beach Motukiekie Beach is located on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, about 15kms north of Greymouth. It is a wild and spectacular location known for its rugged coastline, giant rock stacks, moody weather and thousands of bright orange starfish. The amazing starfish colony is situated right next to a set of dramatic sea stacks forming a truly out of this world photographic combination. One of the difficulties of this location is that there’s a huge tidal variation and there are very few times of the year when it is possible to see the starfish colony at either sunrise or sunset. This is because starfish colony is only visible around low tides and these conditions only occur around 12 days a year.
