King Leopold II and the Congo Free State: Colonial Atrocities 1885–1908

Discover the dark history of King Leopold II's Congo Free State (1885–1908), a colonial regime defined by forced labour, economic exploitation, and mass atrocities against the Congolese people. This documentary draws on historical records, eyewitness testimonies, and scholarly research to examine how rubber and ivory extraction fuelled systematic violence, how colonial policies devastated millions of lives across Central Africa, and how the international community eventually responded to bring global attention to these abuses. From the regime's origins to its eventual dismantlement, this film offers a thorough and thought-provoking account of one of history's most consequential and studied colonial episodes — and why its legacy continues to shape modern African history. #CongoFreeState #LeopoldII #ColonialHistory #AfricanHistory #HistoricalDocumentary #Lykstage #LykstageVideo #LykstageCreator #LykstageCommunity
