After E20 Petrol, India Plans to Bring Ethanol Into Kitchens as Cooking Fuel India's push towards cleaner fuels could soon extend beyond vehicles and into household kitchens. After rolling out E20 petrol across the country, the government is now preparing a policy framework to introduce ethanol as a mainstream cooking fuel alongside LPG. The proposal, currently being developed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, aims to reduce dependence on imported liquefied petroleum gas while expanding the use of domestically produced biofuels. Unlike LPG, ethanol is a renewable fuel produced from agricultural feedstocks such as sugarcane, maize and damaged food grains. Under the proposed plan, households could eventually use specially designed ethanol-based cookstoves, with the fuel made available through a dedicated retail network. Industry experts are also discussing the possibility of "ethanol ATMs," where consumers could refill ethanol canisters for cooking purposes. However, the initiative is still at the policy stage, and no nationwide rollout has been announced. The proposal comes after India achieved nationwide implementation of E20 petrol and is looking to expand ethanol's role in the country's energy mix. Officials believe wider ethanol use could improve energy security, create additional demand for biofuel producers and help lower the country's LPG import bill. The government is expected to consult industry stakeholders before finalising the policy. If implemented, ethanol would not immediately replace LPG but would serve as an alternative cooking fuel for households and commercial kitchens. The transition would require new stove technology, fuel distribution systems and safety standards before the fuel becomes widely available.
