Lluis Montoliu on De-Extincting the Woolly Mammoth | NAUKAS Bilbao 2025

Lluis Montoliu takes the stage at NAUKAS Bilbao 2025 to explore the bold scientific ambition of bringing back the woolly mammoth through de-extinction. In this compelling talk, Montoliu breaks down the driving forces behind de-extinction projects, the cutting-edge role of modern biotechnology, and how advances in genetic research are reshaping our understanding of evolution, biodiversity, and species conservation. The presentation digs into the real scientific challenges researchers face when attempting to revive an extinct species, from genome sequencing and editing to surrogate biology. Montoliu also tackles the ethical questions that inevitably arise — who decides which species come back, and why? Along the way, the woolly mammoth emerges as a powerful symbol of what genetic engineering might achieve, and what responsibilities come with that power. Whether you're a science enthusiast or a genetics professional, this thought-provoking session offers a clear-eyed look at where biotechnology, conservation, and innovation intersect. #NAUKASBilbao2025 #LluisMontoliu #DeExtinction #WoollyMammoth #Biotechnology #Lykstage #LykstageVideo #LykstageCreator #LykstageCommunity
