Paca : The shy forest wanderer with a taste for tropical fruits

A Paca is a large tropical rodent recognized by its reddish-brown coat decorated with distinctive rows of white spots and stripes. Found throughout Central and South America, pacas usually inhabit dense forests near rivers, streams, swamps, and other sources of water. Pacas are mainly nocturnal, spending the daytime hidden inside burrows before emerging after dark to search for food. Their diet consists mostly of fallen fruits, seeds, leaves, roots, and other plant material. By eating fruits and carrying seeds through the forest, they can contribute to seed dispersal and forest regeneration. Pacas are also excellent swimmers and often escape predators by diving into water, where they can remain submerged for several minutes.
