Syria's Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus has issued an in-presence death sentence against Wassim Badi' al-Assad, a cousin of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, following the conclusion of his trial hearings. The court found him guilty on a sweeping range of charges, including war crimes and crimes against humanity for leading and forming armed militia groups that participated in the suppression of civilians, as well as carrying out deliberate killings and forced torture in key areas including Eastern Ghouta, the town of Mleiha, and Jaramana. Additional charges covered abduction and looting operations — known locally as "ta'feesh" — in which groups under his command conducted raids, kidnapped civilians, pillaged commercial properties, and carried out severe extrajudicial torture. The court further ordered the seizure and confiscation of all his movable and immovable assets in favour of the state treasury, after compensation is paid to victims and their families.
