I recently finished Upstream, a roughly 13,000-word epistolary novelette told almost entirely through the entries of a recovered journal. In this video, I talk about what I learned from actually writing a full story in that format, like how epistolary writing changes pacing, exposition, character perspective, and what the reader is allowed to know. I also talk about some of the unexpected challenges of telling a story through documents rather than traditional narration. I give examples of epistolary works such as Frankensein, and Dracula, both of which are available for free as part of the Gutenberg Project. Upstream is available free through The Retinue of House Walker website. If you enjoy behind-the-scenes writing process, historical detail, story construction, and seeing how fiction gets built, consider subscribing. #Upstream #retinueofhousewalker #novelette #epistolary #foundjournal #fictionwriting #lowfantasy
