I love travelling in Jammu and Kashmir Mata vaisno Devi Vaishno Devi (also known as Mata Vaishno Devi or Trikuta) is a revered manifestation of the Hindu Mother Goddess (Adi Parashakti) located in the Trikuta Hills of Katra, in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of the most visited and sacred pilgrimage shrines (Shakti Peeths/holy sites) in India. Key Highlights * The Sanctum Sanctorum (The Holy Cave): Inside the natural cave, the goddess is not worshipped as an anthropomorphic idol, but in the form of three natural petrified rock formations known as the Holy Pindis. These represent: * Maha Kali (right) – Representing Tamas, energy, and dissolution of evil. * Maha Lakshmi (center) – Representing Rajas, prosperity, and preservation. * Maha Saraswati (left) – Representing Sattva, wisdom, and creation. * The Pilgrimage (Yatra): * The trek begins at the base camp town of Katra and spans roughly 12 to 13 km uphill to the main Bhavan, located at an altitude of approximately 5,200 feet (1,585 m). * Key stops along the route include Ban Ganga, Charan Paduka, Ardhkuwari (Garbhjun cave), Sanjhichhat, and the Bhaironath Temple (pilgrims traditionally complete their journey by visiting Bhaironath's shrine). * Travel & Modes of Transit: The path can be completed on foot, via battery-operated autos (from Ardhkuwari to Bhavan), ponies/palkis, ropeway (Bhavan to Bhairon Ghati), or helicopter services operating from Katra to Sanjhichhat. * Administration: The entire yatra, infrastructure, and shrine management are overseen by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), established in 1986.
