On November 23, 1939, the armed merchant cruiser HMS Rawalpindi encountered two of the German Kriegsmarine's most formidable battleships, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, in the freezing waters north of the Faroe Islands. Converted from an ocean liner and armed with outdated six-inch guns, the British ship faced overwhelming odds. Refusing the German demand to surrender, Captain Edward Coverley Kennedy chose to fight to the bitter end. Rawalpindi engaged the capital ships at close range, managing to score a hit before being overwhelmed by 11-inch salvos. Kennedy’s heroic stand bought crucial time for the Royal Navy Home Fleet, cementing Rawalpindi's legacy in naval history. #HMSRawalpindi #Scharnhorst #Gneisenau #BattleOfTheAtlantic #RoyalNavy #Kriegsmarine #WWIIHistory #NavalHistory #WW2Battles #Warships #MilitaryHistory
