In the summer of 1940, the German auxiliary cruiser Hilfskreuzer Komet embarked on one of the most audacious maritime operations of World War II. Disguised as a merchant vessel and commanded by Kapitän zur See Robert Eyssen, the converted merchantman secretly navigated the icy waters of the Northern Sea Route across the Soviet Arctic. Enabled by the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Soviet authorities provided crucial navigational assistance and icebreakers like the Lenin and Stalin to shepherd the German raider through treacherous pack ice. Breaking out into the Pacific through the Bering Strait undetected by Allied naval patrols, Komet launched a devastating commerce-raiding campaign across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Operating alongside the raider Orion, she sank and captured Allied shipping, bombarded phosphate mining installations on the island of Nauru, and completed a full circumnavigation of the globe. Her secret polar transit remains one of naval history’s most daring and politically extraordinary tactical operations. #HilfskreuzerKomet #NavalHistory #WW2History #ArcticTransit #Kriegsmarine #WorldWarTwo #SovietArctic #MerchantRaider #NavalWarfare #WarshipHistory #PacificWar #MilitaryHistory
