The villagers live in fear, and earthbending is strictly forbidden. While exploring the village, Katara encounters a young earthbender named Haru practicing his bending in secret. Despite his initial reluctance to trust strangers, Haru shares his story with Katara. He explains that his father and many other earthbenders have been imprisoned by the Fire Nation, leaving the village defenseless and demoralized. Katara encourages Haru to embrace his abilities and use them to help his people. Haru's bravery is tested when an old man is trapped under rubble. Using his earthbending, Haru rescues the man, only to be reported to the Fire Nation soldiers and subsequently arrested. Determined to help him, Katara devises a plan to infiltrate the prison. She stages her own arrest by pretending to earthbend and is taken to the same prison where Haru is held. Inside the prison, Katara finds Haru and his father, Tyro, along with many other earthbenders who have lost hope. She gives an impassioned speech, urging them to remember their strength and reclaim their freedom. Inspired by her words, the earthbenders unite to overthrow the guards, using coal as their bending medium. With Aang and Sokka's help, Katara leads a successful revolt, freeing the prisoners and defeating the Fire Nation soldiers.
