The Toyota Hilux is an extremely capable vehicle and that is even more evident when the tarmac ends. I drove the Hilux inside the Rajaji Tiger Reserve over loose surfaces, rocky paths on a river bed, steep ascents and descents, 35 degree side inclines, axle twisters and also did some water wading. Whatever was thrown at it, the Hilux came out unscathed and cleared the obstacles with relative ease. The 500 Newton Metre torque of the Auto box was proving its mettle. It comes with shift on the fly four wheel drive system with 3 modes, however do note that to get into 4L, you will have to first stop the vehicle and shift to neutral. In 2 High mode - Power is sent only to the rear wheels. This is for regular use and will most likely be the mode in which you will operate the Toyota Hilux for 90% of the time. 4 High mode is best used in slippery conditions and you want to ensure maximum traction to all wheels while maintaining a reasonable pace. You can shift on the fly from 4H to 2H and I actually tried this out while I was doing about 40KMPH and it worked flawlessly. 4 Low is best used in extreme off-road driving or for obstacle clearance. The torque multiplies and the Hilux just pulls itself out of some really sticky situations with ease. Further, the Hilux also gets an auto LSD or limited slip differential, electronic diff lock, hill assist and tyre angle monitor. With an approach angle of 29 degrees and a departure angle of 26 degrees, most obstacles were a breeze. No official number was provided for ramp breakover angle though. Water wading depth of 700 mm will be more than adequate in most scenarios. Do note though that the Hilux does not come with a Snorkel from the factory. I really had a lot of fun and was equally amazed by the prowess of the Toyota Hilux. Episode presented by Meher Chahal.
