Songs generally form an essential part of a theatrical production. But these numbers, barring a few, do not survive beyond that very space. Dwijendralal Ray's (1863 - 1913) theatre-songs, however, like those of Tagore, are exceptional in this regard, and not only that, they have even transcended the barrier of time alongside the space-factor and earned a life beyond theatre that is so fascinating in terms of both popularity and quality. Let us take "Bela Boye Jay" for instance. Ray composed this for his famous historical play 'Shah Jahan' (1909) more than a century ago, yet it still retains the fragrance of the romance and playfulness that underscore the jovial dramatic mood of the specific scene in the play. In our rendition, which is quite minimalist in terms of musical arrangement and picturization, we have tried to touch upon that perky and vibrant mood, and have thereby experienced ourselves why an old melody like this has acquired a cult status. My sincere thanks to Sabyasachi Dasgupta for his wonderful strumming of the acoustic guitar, the only instrument employed as a musical accompaniment. I am also grateful to Rik and Sudipta for the wonderful work they have done. Hope, you will enjoy the entire presentation. Happy listening!
