As described in the prefatory note, the essence of this ballad of seasons is to celebrate the unison of the external world of form (rupa) and the internal world of emotion (rasa). To me, no other song in "Nataraj" manifests this synthesis with a better poetic and musical elegance than this one. Put under the title of 'pratyasha', i.e. expectation, this song is an epitome of the cosmic desire of endless romance. Deceptively simple and hence often thought suitable for children singing or dancing with it, the song is profoundly layered in its lyrical connotations. Musically too it offers a great variety of possible approaches. I am truly indebted to Avik Ganguly, a brilliant musician, who felt my pulse, went beyond the beaten path to explore its musical beauty and enigma and then offered such a radical treatment. Koustabh is too dear a friend to be thanked formally for his art work. I could not imagine what visual would suit the song other than this simple and elegant sketch, again, as it were, drawn by a child. There was a time when many an idle evening were passed in painstakingly translating Tagore's songs with another dear friend Basu Acharya. This translation is the product of one such effort. I know that it is beyond my capacity to translate the sensuously romantic ethos of the lyric but the sheer absence of any other better version pleads for my case. The translation is given below - Let a gush of rain melt the chain of austerity. Oh dear heart, now feel the tender touch of the dusky beloved. In the endless showers of the monsoon, In the soothing darkness of the woods, Let the golden petals of the cadamba blossom in ecstasy. Let the welkin, the gardens and the three worlds be in bloom, Let the earth dream the pleasure-pains of romance. Oh dark clouds, envelop the outer sky And allow my sight to transcend all barriers, So that I could catch a glimpse of thee, my eternal lover, in a flash of lightning.
