"Kotha Je Udhao" was composed by Rabindranath Tagore in 1925 and it is incorporated in the collection entitled "Shes Barshan" which I translate as "A Last Rush of Rain". The song is originally derived from a traditional khayal bandish "Bol Re Papiyara" set in Mian ki Malhar and Teentaal. But, like almost all such other songs, derived from traditional compositions, "Kotha Je Udhao" too becomes a transcendental creation attaining a new height of poetic and spiritual sensibility. Tagore's version is also more contemplative. The present rendition, with all its simplicity and minimalism, is nothing but a sincere attempt to try and touch that meditative core. I am deeply indebted, as usual, to Koustabh Chakraborty for the art work.
