Rabindranath Thakur composed 'Sukhohin Nishidin' in 1900. This is included in the section called 'Puja' (devotion) in Gitabitan. The song is one of the finest examples of 'Bhanga Gaan' derived from a traditional Nat - Malhar Tarana in Teen Taal and we can see how a piece of pure music without any literal meaning as such can be transformed into a great Kavya Sangeet (poetic song) of exhortation and self-conviction. The notation was done by Indira Devi Chaudhurani and it is collected in Swarabitan No. 8. 'Sukhohin Nishidin' is one of my most favourite songs where I find almost an ideal synergy of words, melody and rhythm. In our rendition we have tried to experiment with the possibility of a Western orchestral setting punctuated with the traditional Carnatic Mridangam which, I am sure, would not have been possible without the musical skill and imagination of Souptik. For the visuals I am indebted to Anakh Samuddur, Abhishek and Rik without whom I could not even think of publishing the song with a video amidst this pandemic.
