#RabindraSangeet #BrahmaSangeet #SokatoreOiKnaadichheSakole #RabindraSangeet #BrahmaSangeet "Sakatore Oi Knaadichhe Sakole" was written by Rabindranath Thakur in the year 1883. Originally a 'Bhanga Gaan' having its root in the Kannada Bhajan - 'Chaari Varsha Paryanta', the Bengali number was the poet's gift for his niece Sarala, who later became a celebrated activist of our country. Daughter to Swarnakumari Devi, another remarkable lady of the Thakur Bari, Sarala Devi writes about the history of the Bengali composition in her autobiography 'Jiboner Jharapata'. According to her own reminiscences, she was barely twelve when her 'Rabi Mama' visited and presented her with the manuscript copybook of Staff Notations containing the song as a birthday gift. She later converted this Brahma Sangeet into a Western Instrumental piece suitable for playing on a band or a piano. Thus, the song got camouflaged behind the chords and a variety of complicated notes. At present the song falls under the category of 'Puja and Prarthana' and the notations are done by Sarala Devi and Indira Devi Chaudhurani. The above mentioned history of this very number, as one can see, validates the inherent musical scope and possibility underneath the apparent monotony of its melodic structure. For me it also has the calming effect of a lullaby to soothe us in this time of turbulence and lovelessness.
