' is one of Faiz Ahmed Faiz's most direct political poems and a landmark of its period for its simplicity. This was first included in the collection Naqsh-E-Faryadi (Remonstrance), published in 1943. It is believed that the poem essentially alludes to Sheikh Abdullah, the radical peasant movement leader of Jammu & Kashmir. V.G. Kiernan has translated the poem as: Speak, for your lips are free; Speak, your tongue is still yours; Your upright body is yours - Speak, your life is still yours. See how in the blacksmith's shop The flames are hot, the iron is red, Padlocks opening wide thier jaws; Every chain's embrace outspread! Time enough is this brief hour Until body and tongue lie dead; Speak, for truth is living yet - Speak whatever must be said. This was set in tune by Arsad Mahmood and originally sung by Tina Sani. In this trying time the song is relevant more than ever and offers a fresh perspective on the very concept of freedom, azadi, as the freedom of a country only makes sense when the people are free.
